So I'm somehow linked up with a publishing company that occasionally will send me books under the condition that I post a review here on this blog.
However not ever book tickles my fancy nor am I a quick enough reader to finish the books in time. But in order to keep these powers that be happy and to keep them sending me free books I asked my mother to step up to the challenge.

“Fatal Deduction” by Gayle Roper

Having just finished Gayle Roper’s book “Fatal Deduction” all I can say is bring her on…I look forward to reading anything written by Ms. Roper.
The book touches on everything a devoted fiction reader wants and looks for in a good read; a love interest, a common bond, suspense, humor and a promise that things will improve.
I found the story line capturing from the first page, with Libby’s struggles to be a good mom, a devout believer in following the will of God and still trying to honor her family, as dysfunctional as it is.
I love reading Christian novels, they leave me with warm fuzzies, but sometimes I am left feeling so totally inadequate at times. I am not able to spout off scripture or recall verses at a moments notice, in ways it is depicted in some books. That is the most appreciative thing I noticed in the book “Fatal Deduction.” Libby simply repeated over and over “Trust in the Lord with all your heart,” and she knew her fears were not warranted and God would protect her, and yet she still had niggles of doubt, like the rest of us do on occasion. She wasn’t pretentious about her faith, she just knew in her heart that God’s way was the right way, and that she needed to rely on Him to propel her forward. She didn’t nor could she throw scripture into the faces of her family and enemies, she simply tried to accept them, even though she judged them and recognized that in herself, trying to be better about that flaw in her character. How many of us, including me do the same thing? Almost all of us I’m sure.
I loved the role of Madge in Libby’s life, good neighbor, mentor and Godly Christian woman, wife and mother. She was placed in Libby’s young life at a crucial point, when she needed encouraging without meddling, acceptance with guilt, and good Christian loving without judgment. How we all wish we had a Madge in our lives, yet it is encouraging to know we could be a Madge to others simply by “walking the walk” knowing someone could be watching and wanting to know more of how they too could walk the same path. It is simply a way of offering hope to someone in need.
It was refreshing to read of Libby’s role as a mother to her daughter Chloe. She loved Chloe from the beginning, not looking at her as a mistake, nor comparing her to the man who fathered her. And she worked hard to bring her daughter up in a loving environment and succeeded without giving in, nor giving up. She led by example, without trying to be Chloe’s best friend, but by being her mother only to be her daughter’s friend, anyway, by Chloe’s choice. They were sweet, normal, and argumentative at times, yet devoted to one another.
And finally Drew, just as it was quoted in the first pages of the book…”For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,” Jeremiah 29:11. Drew, was placed in Libby’s path, not looking for a friend, or future mate, but by simply being one when Libby needed him the most. Such a sweet ending to a tumultuous time.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good, clean suspense, love story, both non-believers and those who know the way. Perhaps non believers will learn to call upon the Lord and believe He has the best plan, and knows the right path to follow. And those who do know the truth will not feel inadequate, because they use flare prayers, like Libby, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart,” that will guide their steps even though they cannot always quote a scripture for every situation.
Way to go Gayle Roper, keep ‘em coming.

Dishing Out Thank Yous

And in honor of such a glorious event I'd like to dish out some thank yous (before I pass out in my bed - it's late I tired)

Turning the Upside Down Right Side Up
This past Sunday our campus pastor preached on the Beatitudes and the Kingdom that Jesus came to establish. The message was okay, it took three listens for me to really understand a couple of his ideas, but that may have been my lack of focus over his lack of clarity...who knows.
And I think he took too much time trying to blow our minds with a radical approach to reading the text than just serving up the actual meat of the Jesus' words (although I can't really say it was that radical and some of the Greek word insights may have been just too much of a stretch - and maybe the cause for my lack of focus...again who knows).
His big idea of the message, I think, was that Jesus establised a kingdom that compared to the world was upside down. But rather than an upside down kingdom Jesus established a kingdom that turned upside down things of this world right side up.
And I believe that and I can deal with my other issues, that stuff doesn't bother me. Where I do think this message failed, and where I think my church struggles to embrass Christ's Kingdom mindset, is in application.
If Jesus called us to His kingdom of turning the upside down right side up how do we live that out?
I dare say it's not by doing nothing.
We won't build into lives of students, turning their upside down lives and relationships right side up by doing nothing for them.
We won't turn the upside down world of the elderly woman, who cannot go to the grocery store on her own, right side up by doing nothing.
We won't care for the young family, turning their upside world of childhood diseases and absences of local family, right side up by doing nothing.
We won't turn the upside down world of the single father, who doesn't have the life skills to adequately care for his children, right side up by doing nothing.
I might be on a personal soap box here but this is something I've had real difficulty with lately.
My church axes a lot of ministry ideas and opportunities under the banner that we are simplifying ministry. But I have heard and experienced on several occasions now stories of people being overlooked (some after direct pleas for help).
There is a fine line between simplicity and laziness, and I'm wondering if we taken a flying leap over it.
That's enough...I'll get off my soap box now and try to get up off my duff and do something.

Hoping for One Last Go Around
John Smoltz announced yesterday that his season was over and that next week he would have potentially career ending shoulder surgery early next week.
I'm really hoping he gets one more season to go out on his terms and that the fans will be able to appreciate his incredible career.
People lose sight of the amazing transformation he made switching from a starting pitcher to a full time closer several years back because of the record breaking stint of Gagne, but Smolz understood the concept of the team and was willing to embrace the role. As dominating as Gagne was Smoltz was always my preference to have closing the big game. I'd even take him over Rivera of the Yankees.
Anyways I'm thinking he needs a farewell season and I'm hoping the rehab process will allow it.
I'm really hoping he gets one more season to go out on his terms and that the fans will be able to appreciate his incredible career.

I know what many people are thinking, especially the guys reading this post, “Trevor we already knew this, and it doesn’t have to be sexy women, all women are bad for your wallet.”
I suppose that’s true, but reading this article lead me to this link, the source for Men’s Health.
Sexual appetite leads men to seek immediate rewards
This is something worth filing away, good research for “that lesson” when you separate the boy from the girls.
The brief article says:
"It seems that sexual appetite causes a greater urgency to consume anything rewarding," the authors suggest. Thus, the activation of sexual desire appears to spill over into other brain systems involved in reward-seeking behaviours, even the cognitive desire for money.
"After they touched a bra, men are more likely to be content with a smaller immediate monetary reward," writes Bram Van den Bergh, one of the study's authors. "Prior exposure to sexy stimuli may influence the choice between chocolate cake or fruit for dessert."
The authors believe the stimuli bring men's minds to the present as opposed to the future. "The study demonstrates that bikinis cause a shift in time preference: Men live in the here and now when they glance at pictures featuring women in lingerie. That is, men will choose the immediately available rewards and seek immediate gratification after sex cue exposure."
Now this isn’t revolutionary information, as advertisers have been using sexual imagery in their marketing campaigns for some time. But what is insightful is that while I may be able to resist the lure of Victoria Secret’s marketing, having visual consumed their images I may be influenced to buy or spend more that I planned when shopping at Target.
This reminds me of a licensed hypnotist we had at camp recently. After hypnotizing several students and having them dance around like chickens, he began to unpack some research on the mind and it’s susceptibility to outside influences. When our minds are at rest, or rather not on guard, or better yet not on heavenly things (being like Christ), we allow ourselves to be exposed to the cravings of the sinful nature. It was great to see the students respond to his challenge (especially those who had been hypnotized, which he referred to as “mind influence”) to submit their will and influence to leadings of The Spirit.
Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so.

Now there are some obvious implications for men here. The article did say that the survey results weren’t applicable to every male, but we do need to be honest about our limitations and weaknesses. However I don’t think the goal here is to avoid the beaches and Victoria Secret windows, rather it is having a mind like Christ – focused on things above where all images are filtered with love. Instead of seeing curves and flesh and allowing ourselves to surrender our control which we once placed before God, we need to see as Jesus saw.
For ladies there is at least one implication I can think of (as a man I don’t dare to speak too much about what I don’t know). With this knowledge there comes a responsibility among Godly women to serve and honor and encourage Godly men. And while there is every now and then a hoochie-mama in our churches who doesn’t know (or care) how to dress, for the most part I don’t hear the complaining from our students.
Um…I guess that’s all I got to say right now.
(And no it wasn’t because of the bikini’d girl in the photo that I read the article, although I did spend a $100 on the site’s online store…I’m just joking…I’m too cheap to be influenced like that…)

I read these today from an e-mail I receive daily and highly recommend called Trendcentral.

I've watched a lot of Indiana Jones lately. Raiders, Temple of Doom, and the Last Crusade all in preparation for the new film. I watched Kingdom of the Crystal Skull a couple times already.
I love them all. I'm watching Raiders of the Lost Ark right now and I can just about quote it all.
Growing up I had the children's read-a-long book and tape, which I would read hundreds of times.
Some of these lines in the movie are still classic. Specifically:

- "I've found him." "Where?" "There."
- "Bad dates."
- "Asps. Very dangerous. You go first."

So I have this woodpecker story that some people (i.e. The Deuce) love for me to tell. However some people (i.e. my parents) don't necessarily care for it (they think it paints them in a poor light).However everyone has been asking me if I am going to post it here on the ol' blog.

Hearing Good Advice
Tonight I attended a birthday/tacky prom/surprise party for a woman who is turning 40 within a few days. This lady, Amy (I think was her name), has been heavily involved in Youth Life for quite some time. In fact the party host was the regional director of Young Life here in San Antonio.
Seriously Young Life people are a different breed. I had no clue what tacky was until I saw this crowd attempt it...I'm ready for the next one. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) I look good no matter what I wear, so trying to dress tacky didn't really work on me. I try to stay even keel, but willing to be wild and crazy, for whatever moments come, but can you even being imagine me as the type of person who would enthusiastically deck it out for a theme party? Me neither, but thank God there are these people...
Anyways after several of Amy's guest shared some personnel testimonies and appreciations for their celebrated friend, Amy shared some thoughts on the evening. As she talked about how events like this, where she could be close to the people she loves and have their conversations and relationships be the soundtrack to her life and faith she said something that made me take note:
"Meet people like you are going to know them the rest of your life."
These are incredible words and a difficult challenge. How exhausting it can be to actually invest in people's lives. Yet it's those relationships that we do invest in that are the most meaningful and memorable...isn't it?
Casual friendships just may not be friendships after all.

The article however was a little odd. It had these mixing metaphors that keep switching, back and forth...Tom Veraducci is usually better than that...

Ladies & Gentlemen...Introducing...
Taylor Winder!
I want to recommend my friend Taylor's blog to all of you. Taylor is in the community group I attend on Thursday nights. Actually she's more than just in it...she's a large part of why we function at all.
For the past couple of weeks Taylor and her family have been in China receiving their new family member. They have adopted a beautiful girl named Teddie (short for Theodora, although I have no clue how to spell it correctly).
Please, please, please... comment on her blog and encourage her to keep up the great posting even after she returns from China.
Taylor is one of those rare people, who doesn't say alot, vocalizing just enough, but when she speaks people should listen up. I joked last Thursday that the Facebook message she sent, along with a prayer request, was more than Taylor had ever spoken in group, and that it might be good for her to attend via Facebook every week.
And it's been especially fun reading about her Chinesse adventure.
Just A Little Grillin'
For my sister's birthday (we celebrated a day early) my dad did some grillin'.
I'm trying to remember what the specific name for the type of steaks we had, tenderized meat with jalapeno peppers rolled into it. Here's a picture of them on the grill.
Along with the steaks we had grilled corn on the corn, baked potatoes (prepared on the grill), and huge shrip. My mom prepared the salad and the cakes (yes two...one for Cayla, my sister, and one for Jacob, my nephew; his birthday was this past Friday).
It was some seriously good eats.

Texas Pride & Pickerz
Friday night after work I met my parents for dinner at Texas Pride for some catfish fry.
The sweet tea was great, the catfish was actually cod. My dad and I sat around trying to talk about the new Indiana Jones movie without giving away details, just in case she gets the urge to go see it.
My dad thought he noticed a woman that he knew from years ago. When the lady got up to dance with husband my dad said, "I don't know her husband, but that ain't him." One of the funniest things I've ever heard him say.
As we ate we enjoyed the music of the Lone Star Pickerz. At the end of their first set they suggested that everyone go to their website and sign up to be one of their Pickerheadz...just in case your interested.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Awesome-ness!
Today I took off from work to go see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (is that sad and pathetic or just devoted?). And I thought it would be cool to take my dad.
I still have vivid memories of my dad taking me and my brothers to see the Temple of Doom when we lived on Guam. Around that time I had purchased with some birthday or Christmas money the book with cassette of Raiders of the Lost Ark, which I listened to over and over again. So even as a first or second grader (I don't remember which) I was a major Indy fan.
The theater we would often go to on Guam was this open aired theater. We would also see the Karate Kid and Rock IV there...two other freakin' amazing movies. The theater had four walls but no ceiling. Which meant while we were watching the movie would could quickly glance up and see the stars.
When we saw Temple of Doom there I remember it raining on us and my brothers and dad all huddled under a large umbrella together. Somehow this made the movie more amazing.
But before we hit the theater my dad and I had lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings. I mention this for a couple of reasons. Anastasia, our waitress, had our table , another table of about 40 people and another large table on the patio. Unfortunately we weren't well taken care of, and while I get frustrated with that I feel bad for Anastasia. Why would the hostess seat us in her section? And why can't someone else have taken our table, even though we were in her section?
I had the chicken wrap with the wedges, and the wedges were cold. Not my favorite trip to the BW3.
Oh back to why I mentioned this lunch trip in the beginning... Can anyone tell me why Buffalo Wild Wings was once called BW3? BW2 would make sense, but BW3...I need answers.
So the movie...

I read that Lucas and Spielberg and company intentionally made the previous Indy movies, because they were set in the 1930s, to mimics the Saturday morning movies of the 1930s and it's themes.
Whereas this current film...stay with me a promise is a promise, set in the 1950s (come on you saw the preview...you knew that), mimics the movies and themes of the 1950s.
It intentionally won't have the same feel as the previous movies...that's what I'm saying.
If you bear that in mind...you'll love it too.

Glimpsing Your Upcoming Death
I read yesterday that P.T. Barnum, when he had grown gravely ill, had his obituary printed prior to his passing so that he could enjoy it.
If you are interested you can read it HERE. It is really interesting; the man lived an amazing life, worthy of the circus.
This got me thinking though…
If I could have a sneak peak at my obituary what would I want it to say?
Maybe this caught my eye because several churches I know of have been doing 30 Days [or One Month] to Live sermon themed series.
So I’m thinking of writing a short obit for myself, possibly using rhyme.
What words should I include?
- Faithful?
- Honest?
- Wise?
- Devilishly Good Looking?

Failing is for Winners
I've been really dumbfounded recently, as I've tried to recruit students to attend Oak Hills Student Ministries Mexico Mission trip, by the number of parents who just flat out told me that they won't allow their children to attend.
But then again I'm not, as our youth ministry is made up largely (90%?) of home schooled students. They are completely afraid of their children being put in any situation that might endanger (challenge) their child.
So when I invite the parents to attend with their child, I get the same fearful response.
The puzzling thing is that Max Lucado just did a series entitled Fearless.
I don't like to question parents or say their wrong, unless the issue is straight up heresy or illegal. But I do think these parents are crippling their children, or building up a future rebellious attitude.
I've been challenging these parents to at least attend the information meeting this Sunday between services.
My job will be to create enough confidence and assurance in our adult leaders, these students and our plans that these parents will allow their children to risk. Pray for me as I really want to build not attack.
Any helpful thoughts or suggestions.
p.s. I think I should clarify that I don't necessarily have any issues with home schooling in general. But I disagree with home schooling as a means of separating from culture. I feel the response I receive more often that not, when asking why someone home schools, is fear of public influence not better education. Also I'm not sure if I think education minus social interaction is really worth it either.

Receiving Recognition Recklessly
So I know that when you receive some sort of public recognition or praise, especially as a Christ follower, you're supposed to be humble and gracious. Probably say something like, "It's all for Jesus" and point up to heaven.I guess I still struggling with that.
Because Shaun Groves, musician and Compassion International hero, specifically mentioned me and my blog on his Shlog today.

Answers to Everyday Grammar Questions
Today on the Mental Floss blog there was a post that dealt with many common grammar questions. I particularly found this interesting, because it addressed a pet peeve issue of grammar for me. Allow me to save you the time of visiting the site by just copying it below.

A: You remember correctly! The usual practice in making names possessive is to add an apostrophe plus s. But there’s an exception. When a Biblical or classical name ends in s, the custom is to add just the apostrophe: Jesus’ disciples, Hercules’ strength, Xerxes’ writings, Archimedes’ principle.
We also drop the s and use only the apostrophe in certain idiomatic expressions with the word “sake” (this avoids a pileup of sibilants). Examples: “for goodness’ sake,” “for conscience’ sake,” “for righteousness’ sake,” “for convenience’ sake.”
The strange thing is I’m horrible at grammar. I do believe I have some struggles with dyslexia, which I’ve learned to combat by quickly viewing a sentence and never really noticing what I actually read. I have to focus on the bigger idea more than the small details otherwise I get lost. So I can not say that I’m perfect in all areas of grammar, but when people verbalize this above mistake it grinds my gears. I even heard the king of Christian literature, Max Lucado, say “Jesus’s” before.
Anyways I post this because when I complain about it and people ask for the grammatical rule I’m not qualified enough to give a good answer. Hopefully this helps.

a Quick glimpse...
I saw this video below and it made me wonder what my roommate, The Deuce, thinks when he listens to Chris (the other roomie) and I rattle on.
I would be the sports guy, Chris the Star Wars nerd, and The Deuce - the cubicle dude. Of course I'm much better looking than that sports guy...
Recently Chris, for his birthday, received a Star Wars pop-up book (that I have to confess is pretty frickin' awesome - solely on pop-up book standards, then a little more for it's Star Wars content). He was showing it off to Rachel and spouting off about what ships were what, using all the technical terms and stuff. Rachel replied:
"Wow, you sure are waving your nerd flag high today...aren't you?"
