Bambi Lives

Tonight I almost killed Bambi as she tried to cross the road. (Was Bambi a she?)

The deer sat in the road staring at me like...um...well...a deer in the headlights.

I used my ridiculously quick reflexes and slowed down time to Matrix levels to avoid the deer.

I first week left, but so did the deer. So I began to turn the vehicle right, up until the deer swung his head that direction. Finally, with inches to spare, I maneuvered left barely circling the young doe.

I think the car behind me avoid her too, but I can't be certain of that.

Sport of the Arts

Tonight I ventured into a world I have never encountered before. Well let me try and not be so dramatic. Tonight I ventured into a world, that outside of a high school football game's half time entertainment, I have never encountered before.
One of my students asked me to attend her colorguard competition.
It was like a the world of illegal street racing before the movie The Fast and The Furious.
Or the world of competitive video gaming before the movie Fist Full of Quarters.
Or Canada.
You've heard of these places, and you kinda want to believe they're real, but honestly...how could they be?
The first thing that took me by surprise was that it cost money to get in. People actually pay to watch young ladies (and occasionally young men) twirl flags around and prance around.
But now that I think about it maybe that's not such a big shocker. Our society being what it is, I suppose this makes sense. But no social commentary tonight.
The next thing I notice was that there is, to my astonishment, a lot of people who watch these colorguard competitions. The stands were full.
And they don't preform on the football field, but the compete in the gym. It was so out of place. It was if the basketball team decided to host their games on the fenced in, black surfaced courts in the middle of the park. Yeah it works, but it ain't right.
I don't remember colorguard at my high school. But then again I wasn't the most involved with school social events. I attended some football games, but to my credit, I spent half time trying to impress the ladies...a lady...okay, okay...any lady.
But these young gals tonight took this stuff seriously. And there was all sorts of colorguard audience etiquette that I was just not aware of; there needs me be a helpful handout.
And I feel I must point out how awkward that lone guy on the squad must feel, or how the squad feels, or at least the crowd watching feels. Not that I think a young man shouldn't follow his passion of dancing before large crowds with wooden guns and flags; and I'm certainly not going to assume a sexual stereotype just because of his extracurricular activities. But I do see how that might become a distraction on some level. Like when a young lady joins the wrestling team.
There was however a team this evening with at least half it's squad being males (10 out of 2o dancers). This did not have the awkwardness of the the team with the lone male. What was unfortunate was this team choose a urban image that often allows for suggestive labeling. Where was the coach in that decision making process?
Or worse, there was the squad that was dressing in black leather pants, and fish net tops (over red a red shirt). This outfit definitely suggested that these young ladies would have a future in the dancing industry; unfortunately the football field wouldn't be their stage.
The announcer, before each team would start, would ask the judges if they were ready (and the judges were a trip too), then ask the team's captain if they were ready, and finally he would give permission for the team to "take the floor in competition". It for some reason reminded me of the big karate meet in the Karate Kid. But instead of people actually kicking each other it was the even more painful world of teenage mean girls.
Finally it was time for the trophies to be handed out. The hosting school's music director played the National Anthem on his saxophone and completely hit a wrong note at the end of the song. He tried to play it off as if he meant to by dragging out the wrong note in a way that saxophonist can do, only he didn't do it well.
Nevertheless I rooted on my student and cheered even when the came in second (They so totally should have won. The team that was horrible.)

This means a new look, but hopefully they can recapture that same old Falcor, The Luckdragon, magic.

Social Claustrophobia

Friday I had a uncomfortable reunion with family I was meeting for the first time.

It was an awkward evening.  Not the reunions, but the circumstance around the reunion.  I have a cousin who was married on Saturday, which was the cause for the gathering on Friday evening.  And several out of town guest had all gathered at one home.

Which leads me to my confession.

I have social claustrophobia.

I don't enjoy large parties.  Especially large parties in small rooms.  For some reason I don't function well.  I don't open up completely.  Even if it's in a group of people that I've known for years.  My elbows seem to always be floating up, and I feel like my personal space is being more crowded (why is that?).

I end up hovering to the edges of the room and watching people.  I don't quite break out into cold sweats, but my palms do get clammy.  

Being surrounded frustrates me.  

I don't care for crowded restaurants, amusement parks, theaters, clothing stores, grocery stores, house parties, cars, airplanes, caves....you get the picture.

There is something very physical to my social claustrophobia, but there is also something else.  I don't even act myself.  

I lose my self-confidence.  

I lose my sense of humor.  

My personality crawls into a shell.  

I'm not sure why.

But I have also noticed a couple of exceptions to those.  

First: I love being in the crowd root, root, rooting for the home team.  Getting caught up in a baseball game with a crowd is an exhilarating experience.

Second: A large church gathering.  I may still try to push myself to the edges, but there is joy in worshipping with others, and it is worth the uncomfortableness.  

Any other social claustrophobiacs (sp? claustrophobians?) out there?

"Hello, I'm Trevor"

This past Friday I met several relatives that I have never met before or had not seen in over 25 years, included my biological father.  

I spent much of the evening saying "Hello, I'm Trevor" to wide-eyed faces of relatives, shocked to see me after so many years.

I'm still trying to work through my thoughts on the whole event.  I don't process well.  Maybe some day I'll be able to articulate it all clearer.  

Aunts and uncles and cousins and of course my father...er...dad...um...I don't know how to quickly reference him.  Maybe just Mondo.  That's his name.

Severaly close people to me have felt that I needed this reunion and that I have deep seeded emotional issues because of the lack of this relationship.  

I don't know about that.

I do know I went to this reunion, not necessarily for myself.  I don't have that deep longing inside of me to know these relationships.  I can understand my older brothers though who sought these family members out.  I just honestly don't.  And maybe that's a problem.  

I might someday grow to love them.  

Several times throughout the night I was told, "Trevor this is your family."

I might someday grow to believe that.

I went to this reunion, because ultimately I felt that I would have been holding something back that others needed.  These people needed to see me and have a chance to know me.   

I went so I didn't feel guilty for failing to serve someone, when all that would be requied is a simple "showing up".

I'll try to share more as I think about it.

Unbelievable Beliefs (aka Believing the Unbelievable)

These days I’m getting over my rights and attempting a higher standard. 

I believe that God gives you and me the freedom to make choices.  To choice myself and my desires or to choice Him and His will.  Sometimes those match.  Sometimes their similar.  Sometimes His go much beyond my ideals.  Sometimes I go far short of His ideal.

I sincerely desire to find myself in that place where my pursuit of Him just might be considered reckless. 

Could I possibly have a reckless trust in Christ Jesus, that I begin to live out a reckless faith.

I think at one point in my life I was there.  

These days I don’t. 

I miss those days.

I have been trying to live Jeremiah 12:5 out the past couple of weeks.  It says this:

"If you have raced with men on foot
       and they have worn you out,
       how can you compete with horses?

 If you stumble in safe country,

       how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?”

I’m getting fed up with living a normal faith in a safe world. 

I have friends who are challenging me in my reckless pursuit of Jesus.  Calling me out. 

I am praying that I might have the boldness to pursue.

My prayer this week went something like this: “I believe, help me in my unbelief.”

 

 

Teenager to be Proud of...

I love reading stories about teenagers who do extraordinary things.  Here is one I read today that I really enjoy and am convicted by.  McKay Hatch started a No Cussing club in his junior high school and has since gone on to challenge numerous others to participate in his campaign to clean up our language.

Sure when McKay starts making songs and videos to promoting his cause I cringe, because it’s typically not up to my usually musical standards.  But how could we not be proud of this young man?

And I can hear it already.  That talk that Christians always seem to have when it comes to the issue of curse words.  I cannot tell you how many late night dorm room theology sessions were held on our right to use any words we so choose.  College students are idiots, and I was chief in these respects.  

Cussing may seem like a small trivial thing.  But I want to believe that if I’m faithful with the little He just might (just maybe), trust me with more.

#1 What do you do when you are depressed?

When I'm depressed? I don't tend to inwardly reflect like this...so I had to think about this some. I'm not sure if this exactly right, but at least one thing I do when I get depressed is go to the movies or watch a movie.

Usually when I'm depressed it's partly because I'm not thinking in perspective. I find I can remove myself from my life thru films. There is something very comforting to me about the darkness of the theater, the soft look of the walls, and a slurpee and popcorn.

I'm sure there are other things I probably do. Possibly grab lunch at Chic-fil-A, isolate myself, drive over the speed limit, or sleep too much.

Maybe this is all a way of not dealing with my depression. But what else am I going to do about it? Certainly not talk about it...

New Name

I've been taking a lot of photos of birds lately. I don't know why. However I feel the need to inform you all that I do not bird watch with a pair of binoculars. For some reason that seems like an awkward hobby to me. However Flight Lt. Colin Blythe, aka The Forger, from the movie The Great Escape was straight up cool. And if you remember he seemed to know a great deal about Orioles.
Anyways. That is all a bunch of blathering to show off this little friend who was singing at me this morning as I walked into work. I don't know if it's a boy or a girl, so I'm going to give him/her an a-sexual name. Meet Sam.

#44.  How many of the US States have you visited?

I am going to answer this two ways.  First the number of states I have physically been in and second how many actually visited. (Is that the right word? places that I have stayed and enjoyed, not just passed through…does that make sense?)

How many states have I physically entered? – 36 plus the territory of Guam and Washington D.C..  If I’ve been in others I have no recollection.  They are from west to east: Hawaii, California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, Mississippi, Tennessee, Indiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York

How many states have I actually enjoyed time in? – I’m going to say 24.  They are: Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, Mississippi, Tennessee, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, New York.  Plus Guam and Washington D.C.  I should probably also mention that I lived in Germany and traveled throughout Europe. 

"God, what about me makes you proud?"

During a period of prayer, specifically a time of listening, this morning (and again this evening) in church we as a community corporately and individually asked God what about us makes Him proud.

I had a difficult time asking this question. I live in and know myself by my failures. So spending time in quiet anticipation of an answer from God was excruciating. Why would God see me any other way than how I see myself? And why would I want to hear that inevitable answer from the God whom I so desperately try to appease.

Instead I spent those few minutes in the service hearing from Him, and arguing with Him, about the way that He sees me. God mainly reminding me about the method by which He evaluates my worth and value is nothing like mine.

I live in my regrets. I daily see the scars I've emotionally and spiritually cut into me. I cringe whenever anyone asks why I was suspended for a week in high school. I weep when I recall the moments that led to my resignation (read termination) from my ministry in North Carolina. I know the potential for my darkness and the struggle it takes to resist.

What about me would God feel any need to even look upon me, let alone be proud of me?

So then. I head home and enjoy dinner with great friends. People I respect immensely and in no way measure up to. Their levels of commitment and service baffle me.

We eat some spaghetti. Someone opens a bottle of wine (I drink water because I'm out of Dr. Pepper). And another inserts Rob Bell's The Gods Aren't Angry tour DVD. I saw this tour live and have seen this DVD on several occasions. Each time it leaves me breathless. Broken. Better.

As Rob traces the evolution of man's understanding of our awareness of forces outside of our control and our burden of continually trying to appease those forces, he eventually reveals the "culmination of the ages". And because of Jesus' satisfactory and fulfilling sacrifice we no longer "have to live that way". (That's a very brief and limited recap of the presentation and I would suggest you watch it get the full impact.)

So tonight. I grapple with not living that way. When will I allow Christ to define me? One would think that twenty years of Christ-following would have brought me to a place of confident assurance.

Tonight's prayer as I head to bed: Rescue me from myself. Renew me to Your understandings. Revive me, making me a living sacrifice, so that I may live out Your good news of the "culmination of the ages".

My Dream Girl Makes Me Question Myself

Okay. So every Monday I have been answering questions that you readers have asked of me. One of those questions was to describe my perfect girl; answering more than my typical response, "a rich girl with low self-esteem and daddy issues" (that makes me laugh). Which at some point I will fully answer for you. Trying to answer that without sounding too shallow or too spiritual-uppity is forcing me to actually think through that response.
However as I'm thinking through the qualities, characteristics and physical appearance of the woman I want to ultimately know more intimately than anyone other person, I am forced to ask some questions of myself.
Tommy Nelson says that before you can be a good husband to your bride you must first be a good bride to your Husband (Jesus). Processing that is challenging me to evaluate my love relationship with Christ. I believe that I should be pursuing Christ with a relentless passion. I also believe that as I pursue Christ, He will reveal to me a woman who is relentlessly running after Him. And that our common pursuit will be our foundation.
So I have to ask myself; Am I pursuing Jesus with a reckless abandonment or are there some areas of my life that I need to place on an alter before God as a living sacrifice? And if there are some areas, what are they and will I truly release them?
The other questions I am currently asking are in regards to my character. Am I the person in private that the woman of my dreams deserves? Specifically are there cracks in my character that would cause or are causing regret or resentment in my relationships?
And finally, since physical appearance is important in whom I am searching for (to some degree, if I'm honest) I need to consider my own appearance and physical presentation. Am I dressing well enough? How's my hair look? Do I smell nice? Should I and how much weight should I lose?

I ask these questions of myself because I don't believe in such a thing as a perfect girl, although Pam from The Office is dog-gone close, rather I believe in a perfect love. And since I am asking God, in His will and in His timing, to give me someone to love, I can not dictate who that is. I can not choose who loves me, I can only choose how I will love her and what I can offer her to love in return.

Um...just some late Saturday night inner ramblings I thought I should share with you all.

But don't worry I won't cop out of the question I was asked. I will share with you some specific aspects I am attracted to in the ladies. Maybe not this Monday but soon.

(I am typing this on my phone and if there are more grammar errors than usual please forgive me. I have trouble proof-reading as is, but for some reason even more so on this thing.)

7.  Do you remember the names of the people you meet?

No.  I'll try to remember names, but it typically takes some sort of experience with a person to remember their name.  

Even with people who I have known my whole life I have to work through my mental Rolodex to recall their name.  It goes something like this: "A"...no.  "B"...no.  "C"...no. "D"...um...that seems familiar..."D-a"...Danielle...no..."D-e"...Denise...no...Dolores...I don't know anyone named Dolores..."E"... And so on.

Just meeting a stranger and having the expectation of remembering their name, well, I crack under the pressure.  I can generally remember someone's name for a night, but a week later I'll have to ask that person's name all over again.  And it's honestly not because I don't care (or maybe on a deep subconscious level I don't) but I need something more than a casual introduction to carve our the precious memory space from my limited capacity.  

34.  What was your favorite band when you were a freshman?

I wouldn't call myself a huge music fan.  I know what I like and I like what I know.  So when it comes to exploring other stuff I don't give it very long.  However I am always willing to give things a second chance, or even third chances.  But I don't try and pretend to be that guy who is into all the indie bands and is "hip" with the music scene.  I'm not also that guy who pours over CD booklets memorizing ever word or tries to describe every sound.  

So saying all that.  Let's see.  When I was a freshman in high school I believe my favorite musical artist was Wes King.  It started with his song I Believe, which for a young guy, helped begin shaping my foundational beliefs about my Christian faith.  As I grew to learn his other music I began to appreciate his storytelling abilities, his incredible guitar work and the theological care in his songs.  Okay, that's what I later figured I liked about his music, but as a freshman I just liked it.  To this day I've never met another Wes King fan.

But I also would say that Rich Mullins has been a continual favorite of mine since his Winds of Heaven...Stuff of Earth album.  It was just around the time this album was being released that Rich came out to our church in South Dakota and shared a new song called Awesome God.  So I think I would have to include him in this mix.

If you are asking me who my favorite band was when I was a freshman in college I would have to say Caedmon's Call.  Their lyrics.  Their harmonies.  From the first time I heard their song Lead of Love to the haunting Center Aisle I was dedicated to this group.  It was also during my freshman year of college that Rich Mullins and Mitch McVicker were in their fatal car wreck.  I had this hole in my CD collection that would be filled with the rhythms and rhymes of other singer/songwriter types of Andrew Peterson and Bebo Normon.  I first heard these two at my first Caedmon's Call concert.

53.  Favorite recipe/dinner?

This is kind of a tough one.  When it comes to recipes I don't do a whole lot of cooking.  I've can make things in bulk, but just for myself I don't cook a lot.  But I'm proud of my salsa.  Recently I made some killer cupcakes.  And I pour an incredible bowl of cereal.  Beyond that I would have to follow directions very closely.  

When answering which is my favorite dinner, I might answer the Whiskey River BBQ Chicken Wrap at Red Robin, because I do like that.  But I don't know for certain.  On my birthday I always have hamburgers and chocolate cake.  Or my dad grills a mean steak, corn on the cob and asparagus.  

Okay now I'm hungry.

23. What reality TV show would you like to be on?
I think it would have to be (1) The Amazing Race, followed by (2) Survivor and then (3) Cops.

29. Who was your first crush?
When we first met she was 8 years old and I was 6 years old.

45. What do you like on your Subway sandwiches?
Every time I have some Subway I order the same thing. Even after I talk myself up before entering into the doors.
I begin by asking for the wheat bread.
And then it's always the same meats: turkey and ham.
Depending on whether or not the specific Subway has Swiss cheese or not depends on my cheese choice. But generally I choose Swiss.
Then it's on to the veggies. I start with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers (because their pickles always look gross) and carrot slices (something I've started add to sandwiches I make at home too).
Finally I all their honey mustard sauce.
Delicious.

Tebow Returns

He announced today that he is coming back for his senior year.

This is significant because as a two time Heisman finalist (one time winner) and a two time national champ we may be witnessing the greatest college football player ever. Forget how he adapts to the next level. Forget that he has a slow NFL delivery on his passes (because he's not in the NFL). Forget that if he does go to the pros he is likely to be converted into a fullback or tight end. What he does right now, at this level...it's incredible. Few players have ever shown the amount of do-whatever-it-takes-to-win attitude that he has so far in his career.

And to make matters even better, this young man has continually proved himself to be a God-honoring, respectable young man.

You got to root for this guy. Maybe not the Gators, but definitely for him.

Got Milk?

So a while ago I started buying Promised Land milk. I did for a couple of reasons.
#1 - It comes in smaller amounts. When I purchase larger amounts of milk I never finish it by the expiration date, and I have accidentally drank spoiled milk one too many times. Therefore I don't even tempt that expiration date. And with these smaller amounts I don't have to as often.
#2 - I really like the glass jars. They make me feel like I live in the 1950s, except that I don't have it delivered to my door by the milkman. Do they even have milkmen anymore?
#3 - Nope. I don't have a third reason. As you may recall I said I started buying Promised Land milk "for a couple of reasons." The word couple typically implies two. Certainly you all know that.

Now, the reason for this post. I can not bring myself to throw away the empty bottles and they have begun to pile up. I'm exactly sure where to take them so they can be recycled. But I also think they look pretty cool and was thinking some kinda art project with them. However I'm stumped as far as ideas.
How about you? Do you have any ideas on what I should do with these?

John Adams

I just finished the HBO mini-series John Adams. This is an incredible movie, and I have to recommend it to you.
Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney both have amazing preformances as John and Abigail Adams. And the set designs and production work recreated colonial America as best as I could imagine it. The portrayals of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and others wer nothing to ignore either.
I would venture to say that there will be many aspects of the characters that you are able to relate to and revile. Here is one quote of John Adams in the movie that I could relate to:
"My thoughts are so clear to me... each one takes perfect shape within my mind. But when I speak, when I offer them to others, they seem to lose all definition."
It seems that I am one of the view to have not read a David McCullough book. However this shall shortly be remedied as I have borrowed his biography on Truman from a friend.

I finally got around to watching the video below.  I'm not sure why I found this interesting, but I watched all of it, so I must have.  If you're not interested I suppose I could understand, in which case just ignore this blog post.

53 years ago today (Jan. 8), Jim Elliot and four other missionaries were killed in Ecuador seeking to meet and evangelize the Waodani people.

I love his prayer. There is danger in that prayer; it's always dangerous to ask God to consume your life. What if God were to grant that request? My prayer tonight is for God to mold my heart into a heart that can honestly pray that prayer.

John Smoltz

I just read that John Smoltz will pitch for the Red Sox next year.  I think John Smoltz is great.  One of the greatest pitchers of his time (along with Roger Clemons and Greg Maddox).  Not many players can make the transition from an elite starting pitcher to an elite closer and back to an elite pitcher.  In fact I am having trouble recalling any other pitcher to do so.

But to leave the organization you have spent your entire career with and join the dastardly, despicable Red Sox.  Well that may just be unforgivable. 

Some things are just not right. Babe Ruth in a Braves uniform.  Joe Montana taking snaps for the Chiefs.  Michael Jordan playing in anything other than a #23 Bulls jersey. 

But Smoltz-y in Beantown, that’s just wrong.

19. Polka dots or stripes?

If I had to choose between the two I suppose I would pick stripes.  I don't think I've ever owned, let alone wore polka dots.  I tend to purchase plain colors or plaids, but just saying that makes me sound very boring.  However, that's probably the look I am trying to project.

36. Fries from In-n-Out or McDonald’s?

I've never been to an In-n-Out, therefore I've never had their fries before.  I could not give them an honest shake.  In high school I was a manager at a McDonald's and have had my share of those.  People always ask me if I'm sick of them; I can honestly say that I'm not.  However, I rarely eat at McDonald's anymore.  Not because I'm tired of their food.  If I'm going to have fast food I'm going to choose Chick-fil-A.  And if I can open the In-n-Out vs. McDonald's fry debate I will always pick Chick-fil-A's waffle fries!

43. What is your favorite beverage?

This is no secret.  I believe that the rivers in heaven flow with Dr. Pepper.  I also like Dr. Pepper.

Allergy Shots

Today I began a series of injections that, I'm told, should dramatically improve my health. Not only will improve my reactions to these San Antonio allergens, but it will improve the stress these allergies put on my asthma.

My family will always share with people about how scared I am of shots. My parents will tell you that I would throw fits when receiving my immunizations.

I, of course, would say that they are exaggerating. But even if I wasn't, what the big deal. I would think my parents would be encouraged that I would never become a crackhead.

I will confess though that whenever I do roll up my sleeve, preparing myself for the needle's impending prick, my heart rate does pick up and my palms do begin to sweat.

This was true today as well.

One shot into the back of my right arm. A second followed into the back of my left arm.

After each shot I make the same response to myself: "That was it?"

One down. Five to seven years to go.

Bush's Legacy

As Bush's presidency comes to a close I'm sure we are going to be seeing more and more summations of his time in office.  I personally am really excited for a year or two from now when his autobiography comes out.  I think the media, despite whether or not you (or they) agree with Bush's decisions, convictions and policies, has painted a very limited portrait of a rather interesting figure.

Book Review: Only Nuns Change Habits Overnight

I received this book in the mail this week. And despite it's pink cover I gave it a quick read. That's right...I'm not afraid of a little pink. Just don't think it makes my manly skin tone, so I refuse to wear it on that basis alone.
Okay that's a lie. I really don't like pink. Maybe it's a reaction to childhood memories of Pepto-Bismol.
I digress.
I thought the title was clear so I agreed to read and review this one.
Let's see...how could I review this for you. I hate reviews that try too hard to sell a book. You either trust me and you are in search of a book like this. Or you trust me and you are not in search of a book like this.
Seriously...who wouldn't trust me. I know what's good.
Also a review should tell you everything in the book.
So I need to use words that sell without selling and yet are succinct.
So I'll review this book by saying this:
1. It's good.
2. It's easy to read.
3. It's easy to identify the 52 Amazing Ways to Master the Art of Personal Change she suggest, based on how they formatted the book.
4. It's a quick read.
5. It's a short read...coming in just under 200 pages.
6. It's written primarily for women, but confident men will appreciate it to.
7. It's easy to put into practice.
8. It's got great questions at the end of each chapter.
9. It's entertaining.
10. It's a witty title. (okay I just wanted to have a 10th point)

Seriously if you are looking for some help to make a change in any area of your life go buy this book.

NFL Playoffs: Week 1 Predictions

I believe all the road teams are favored this week, something that isn't typical.  But I always believe in at least one upset.  That being said, here are my week 1 predictions:

Indianapolis at San Diego

San Diego has caught fire recently.  Indianapolis is winning despite...well...despite everything.  I don't think they will go very far, but I'm picking San Diego in this matchup.

Baltimore at Miami

Baltimore is playing tough football.  Miami is a pleasant surprise to these playoffs.  But Miami's season should end this weekend.

Philadelphia at Minnesota

This is a tough game to call.  Minnesota is got a great ground game, but without a solid passing game will they be shut down by Philadelphia?  Can Philadelphia put together to consistent good weeks of football.  I always doubt McNabb.  Minnesota runs Peterson to a win.

Atlanta at Arizona

Atlanta is a solid team, both on offense and defense.  And they have a better running game than Arizona.  Arizona despite host their first playoff game in a long time won't have enough in their tank to hold off Atlanta.  But it's hard to cheer against Kurt Warner.

2009 Goals

Last year I shared with you my goals for 2008 and I actually accomplished some of those. So I thought I should try this again for 2009. And this year I’ll try and give more regular updates. In a couple of days I’ll also do a recap of my 2008 goals.

Now I should list my 2009 goals. Some of these goals are being made for me. Some of them are second attempts because I failed at them this year. Some of them are repeats because they were challenging enough that by repeat them I’m not necessarily making it easier on myself. Some are really simple goals, these hopefully will give me confidence to complete the ones that require more discipline. All are measureable, because I like to know if I succeed or not. And hopefully all will make me better: a better man, a better Christ follower, a better youth pastor, a better potential husband (wink wink ladies), etc.)

Oh…and I suppose I should say that I still don’t like the term resolution. It seems incredibly cliché. But then again so does the term goals, so what do I know.

Here are my 2009 goals

1. Find a new job. - Again, some of these goals were being made for me, and this one comes care of the United States Air Force. Due to the closure of the base I work at I will be out of the job sometime in the fall. Now the USAF will do what it can to find me another position within the system, but I want to use this opportunity to get back into full time ministry. This is where my passion is anyways.

2. Read 40 books. - This is a repeat goal, but I thought it was the right amount of books to challenge myself with. This is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3.5 books a month.

3. Memorize Colossians. - Another repeat, but this is because I failed to accomplish this last time. This time I am going to set some sub-goals in order to really achieve this one.

a. January – Read once a day.

b. February – Create flash cards with each paragraph and put them in order once a day.

c. March – Create flash cards with each sentence and put them in order once a day.

d. April & May – Create flash cards with each word from chapter 1 and put them in order once a day. Once a month write out the chapter.

e. June & July – Create flash cards with each word from chapter 2 and put them in order once a day. And once a week do the same with chapter 1. Once a month write out chapters 1 & 2.

f. August & September – Create flash cards with each word from chapter 3 and put them in order once a day. And once a week do the same with chapters 1 and 2. Once a month write out chapters 1 -3.

g. October & November – Create flash cards with each word from chapter 4 and put them in order once a day. And once a week do the same with chapters 1-3. Once a month write out the book from memorization.

h. December - Recite the book twice a week.

4. Visit some friends. – Whether it be in Kansas City, North Carolina or out in California. Get away from where you are and spend a week of enjoying where someone else is.

5. Visit two baseball stadiums. – This was suggested by a friend, and certainly this is a great goal. Actually she suggested I visit two baseball stadiums that I’ve never been to before.

6. Visit a Doctor. – while I went to an asthma and allergy specialist in 2008, I haven’t seen a general practitioner in years. Just for daily health stuff. I start my allergy shots next week, so life/health should start improving. But I ignore so many other things in my life, who knows if I’m healthy or sick.

7. Sign up for some kind of class. – I’ve been thinking how I need to discover something else. Maybe karate, or a dance class (in case I ever get married I can dance with my woman at the reception), or photography…something. Let’s work on this together.

8. Prep for a mission trip in 2010. – It was suggested by a friend that I visit Africa, which is something I would love to do. But I would also love to visit Southeast Asia or South America. But more than just visit one of those places I would love to find something I could do while I was there. So I officially starting a search for my Mission Trip 2010.

I feel like I'm forgeting something, and because I've chicken stratched these on napkins and loose pieces of paper for the past sevearl weeks I'm going to have to look around or rethink of what they were. Maybe I can figure it out and add to this list tomorrow.

Leaders are Readers

This is an interesting article by Karl Rove about his and the President's reading list, which was turned into a contest.

On average Bush reads close to 50+ books a year.  I'm really impressed.  And apparently this would be an even higher number if he didn't have all thos presidential responsibilities getting in the way.

And because of this prolification in reading I'm anxiously awaiting his memoir upon his retirement.  This certainly goes in the face of the portrayal of Bush by the media as an poorly educated man.  And I expect to find a facsinating read.

Shocking News

Broncos fire Shanahan after 14 seasons as head coach

This headline took my by surprise.

Of course I think he'll land on his feet quickly anywhere he wants to go, if he wants to go anywhere else.

I hated to see him leave my 49ers after their last SuperBowl win, and I'm shocked that Denver let him go.  This is one head coaching change I wasn't expecting.

My Neighbors

Joe and Lisa are back.  I saw their huge 5th wheel trailor in the parking lot of our apartment complex tonight.  Joe and Lisa are awesome.  Joe is retired military and now the two of them use their apartment as a home base for the annual travels around America.  For anyone who loves to travel, Joe and Lisa are your type of heroes.

A little over a week ago I got an e-mail from Lisa.  It was really out of the blue.  But because I found it really cool and a great encouragement I asked her if I could share it here.  Here is our e-mail conversation.

Lisa Culfa here - in case you didn't gather that from my encrypted email adress.
I'm ashamed to admit that I finally got around to checking out your blog this evening for the first time (my head is truly hanging in shame).  Anyway, I simply had to write you a short note and tell you how GREAT it is!  It is really great - but I guess I just said that.  It was hilarious (the story of the white elephant gift exchange - and especially the subway sub) and touching (the story about the military family with the injured husband).  I probably could have (or at least should have) guessed that it would be a really good representation of you.  You seem to be equal parts sensitive (in the best way) and funny.  I enjoyed seeing what's on your book list and what your favorites are - gives me more ideas for future reading.  As for your music playlist I've got to get out more or at least turn on the radio more often.  I scarcely recognized even half of the artists.  I better quit just constantly going back to my favorites (mostly country and jazz) and expand my musical palette (I hope that's the correct palette I'm using and not palate).  Anyway, I'll keep checking in and enjoying you and write a bit more often when I do - it's kinda sad not to see any comments posted to your good stuff.  We're all just scared our comments will pale in comparison to yours.
Joe and I are currently in Tucson AZ at the Family Campground on Davis Monthan AFB.  We love this location - to visit only, not to live.  We'll be back home on December 30th and look forward to seeing you and Chris again.  Hope all is well there at Chelsea Place and that you're enjoying the Christmas season to the fullest.
Oh, and by the way - not to worry about the being single thing like Kate Hudson.  You'll meet your perfect person when you least expect it - that's always the way it works.  Besides, anyone would be truly blessed to have you in their life - can't imagine ever being able to say the same about Kate or Matthew :).
